Banglish-First AI Agents for the Bangladesh Market
Your customers don't message in pure Bangla or pure English — they mix both. Here's how we design prompts and guardrails for real Bangla-English conversations.
Real customers write Banglish
Open any F-commerce inbox and you'll see it: "vai eta ki available? price koto? amr lagbe asap." Not pure Bangla, not pure English — a natural mix, often typed phonetically in Latin script. Most off-the-shelf chatbots, tuned for clean English, stumble on exactly the messages your customers actually send.
Why generic bots fail here
Three failure modes show up constantly. They misread phonetic Bangla ("koto" leaves them confused). They reply in stiff formal Bangla that feels robotic. Or they switch languages mid-conversation in a way that feels off. Any of these breaks trust, and a buyer who feels misunderstood just leaves.
How we design for Banglish
- Match the customer's register. If they write casual Banglish, the agent replies in the same friendly mixed tone — not textbook Bangla.
- Understand phonetic input. The agent is prompted to treat Romanized Bangla ("dam koto", "kobe pabo", "cod ache?") as first-class input, not noise.
- Stay consistent. Pick the customer's lead language and stay there unless they switch.
- Keep the brand voice. The persona — for us, Nex — stays warm and helpful, never cold or overly formal.
Guardrails matter more in mixed language
Mixed-language input makes it easier for a bot to misunderstand, so the safety net has to be tighter: answer only from real product and policy data, never invent a price or a delivery promise, and hand off to a human the moment confidence drops. A confident wrong answer in Banglish is still a wrong answer.
The takeaway
Serving the Bangladesh market isn't about translating English into Bangla. It's about meeting customers in the language they actually type — mixed, casual, phonetic — and doing it accurately. That's the difference between a bot people tolerate and one that actually closes sales.
